What Happens to the Woman in Revelation 17?

What happens to the woman in Revelation 17? Scripture reveals a dramatic ending for this mysterious woman, whose ultimate fate illustrates God’s final judgment upon Babylon.

In my previous article, Who is the Woman in Revelation 17?, I explained what this woman represents, her relationship with earthly political powers, and why her identity matters to Christians today. If you haven’t read that article yet, click the link above for all the details.

But what happens to this woman? Does she live happily ever after, or does Scripture reveal a very different ending?

This article addresses the demise of this woman, the false church.

We begin by looking at the passage in Revelation 17:16-18 NKJV

  1. And the ten horns which you saw on the beast, these will hate the harlot, make her desolate and naked, eat her flesh and burn her with fire.
  2. For God has put it into their hearts to fulfill His purpose, to be of one mind, and to give their kingdom to the beast, until the words of God are fulfilled.
  3. And the woman whom you saw is that great city which reigns over the kings of the earth.”

The harlot mentioned here is the same woman described earlier in the first article.

At the end of time, Jesus Christ will return to earth. He will bring righteousness and establish a perfect society and government focused on true worship and service to God. Before this happens, He must bring judgment upon the evil and ungodliness that have dominated the world, clearing the way for His righteous reign since righteousness cannot coexist with them. This also means that all false religions will be destroyed.

This passage discusses the destruction of religious Babylon, which represents false worship in the end times: a religion centered on worshiping the state and its leader, the antichrist. By law, people will be required to give their first loyalty to the state or face death. That means everyone will be subject to a worldwide system of religious and political authority; this is what is meant by religious Babylon.

Why Do the Ten Kings Turn Against Babylon?

Verse 16 mentions the beast’s ten horns. In biblical prophecy, horns symbolize strength, power, and authority. These horns belong to the scarlet beast described in Revelation 17 and discussed in the previous article. The scarlet beast represents the succession of political kingdoms and empires, from Babylon to the final worldwide coalition. Revelation 17:12 identifies the ten horns as ten kings, representing the political powers that unite with the beast at the end of time.

As God’s final judgments unfold, the kings of the earth realize that the religious system they supported cannot save them. They turn against the woman—the harlot, or apostate church. This occurs during the final judgments associated with the seventh plague described in Revelation 16:17–21.

17 Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, “It is done!”

18 And there were noises and thunderings and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth.

19 Now the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. And great Babylon was remembered before God, to give her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath.

20 Then every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.

21 And great hail from heaven fell upon men, each hailstone about the weight of a talent. Men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, since that plague was exceedingly great.

This is the final plague. Notice the voice from the throne: “It is done.” This refers to the final destruction of the union of the wicked and satanic forces. Babylon is specifically mentioned in this judgment as “Great Babylon,” the great city represented by the woman in Revelation 17:5

When people realize that the woman’s false teachings—the wine of Babylon—have led them into rebellion against God and brought His judgments upon them, their allegiance to her will turn into hatred. The very people who once supported her will now turn against her.

Oh, the irony! The very political powers that supported her so vigorously will ultimately turn against her. Despite her worldwide influence, popularity, and power, religious Babylon will fall. This is why God’s call to come out of her is so urgent. More on that shortly.

The Destruction of Religious Babylon

In the seventh plague, Babylon receives the full measure of punishment for its sins. Although Babylon has committed many offenses, including persecuting and killing saints and prophets over the centuries, its final act of rebellion brings its sins to their culmination. This occurs when human legislation enforces laws that directly contradict God’s law.

Returning to our main text in Revelation 17, verse 16 tells us that she will be made desolate and naked, her flesh will be eaten, and she will be burned with fire. This dramatic language is symbolic, describing the destruction of the false church-state power at the end of time. She is left desolate and in ruins, having lost the support of the nations that once sustained her.

At the beginning of the chapter, the woman is adorned in luxurious clothing, as discussed in the first article. By verse 16, she is stripped of her splendor and left naked, symbolizing her complete exposure and humiliation.

The phrase about eating her flesh figuratively describes the violent nature of the powers that once supported her as they carry out her destruction. She is also burned figuratively, showing how those same powers destroy her. Ultimately, religious Babylon cannot survive the establishment of Christ’s righteous kingdom, for evil cannot coexist with righteousness.

Verse 17 reveals that God ultimately controls religious Babylon’s destruction. He will use the very political powers that once supported her to carry out His judgment. Even though it is they who turn against her, they will be fulfilling His word.

Notice how religious Babylon is identified in verse 18. The woman is described as the great city that reigns over the kings of the earth, representing a false religious system that influences political powers. Through this union of religion and state, people will be compelled to give their allegiance to its authority.

This is the future demise of the false church and its influence. But make no mistake: this false church and the antichrist exist today, hidden in plain sight. An urgent cry to come out of this false church will be heard. For those who take Scripture and biblical prophecy seriously, however, that warning is relevant today.

God’s Final Warning: Come Out of Babylon

Let’s read Revelation 18:1-5 NKJV:

  1. After these things I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was illuminated with his glory.
  2. And he cried mightily with a loud voice, saying, “Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hated bird!
  3. For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury.”

4 And I heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues.

  1.  For her sins have reached to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities.
  2. Therefore her plagues will come in one day—death and mourning and famine. And she will be utterly burned with fire, for strong is the Lord God who judges her.

Okay, now we have the announcement of fallen Babylon—the false church that will become a dwelling place of demons, foul spirits, and everything unclean. And notice that it says “ALL THE NATIONS” have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication. This is a worldwide organization.

What Happens to the Woman of Revelation 17?

Verse 4 contains an urgent cry: “Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues.”

Notice that this appeal does not come from the angel but from “another voice from heaven.” It is God’s final appeal to His people to come out of Babylon.

As I noted in the first article, God knows there are people in this false church, and in its branches, with good intentions, oblivious to the circumstances. Which is why he addresses them as “my people.”

Babylon’s numerous and grave sins over the centuries resulted in the deaths of countless believers during the dark ages. According to Revelation 16:6, she is responsible for the blood of saints and prophets. During the loud cry, it is announced in verse 5 that Babylon’s sins have reached heaven.

How do Babylon’s sins reach heaven? The first five verses of chapter 18 indicate that all nations have partaken of Babylon’s wine. Sins of this magnitude can’t help but reach heaven.

It is time to heed this warning from heaven today! After all, we may be long gone before this announcement; we do not know the timing. If we die following the false teachings of this church…guess what? We will share in its ultimate fate, even if we die before the plagues occur. As Scripture warns, “lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues. Because Scripture tells us this church is going down, and it will take everyone who remains a part of it down as well. As the Scripture reads: “burned with fire.”

Why We Must Be Vigilant Against False Teachings

Scripture says in 1 Peter 5:8, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”

Listen, what better way to devour God’s people than through the church? So, it matters where we go to church—where we worship—and what we are taught.

We must be “sober”—alert, and we must be “vigilant”—on guard.

Coming soon on this website, a series of articles will address the manifestations—the false doctrines— of this false church and its branches.

This segment of articles will address the practical ways Satan has attacked God’s church. It is no wonder God will cry out, “Come out of her.”

The Three Angels Message

The Three Angels Message

The three angels’ message is related to the second coming of Jesus Christ. What is it, and who should receive it? In this article, we explain the Three Angels Message.

What is the Three Angels Message?

The Three Angels Message

The Three Angels Message interprets the messages given by the three angels in Revelation 14:6–12. It is part of John’s vision of the end times while exiled on the island of Patmos.

In this passage, three angels contrast the destiny of Christians with that of unbelievers. This contrast represents a shift away from the anticipated triumph of God’s people (vss. 1-5). It contrasts with the pouring out of the seven bowl judgments on the earth prior to Jesus’s return. In essence, God will judge evil.

The doctrine holds that these messages prepare the world for God’s second coming.

The Three Angels Messages

To examine these messages, we first look at Rev 14:6-7.

6 And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,

7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

The Three Angels Message - The First Angel

The first angel’s message prompted people to fear God and worship him because the hour of his judgment had come. The “everlasting gospel” was still the Good News. Even in these final moments of judgment, God gave the people the opportunity to repent. This announcement may be the final fulfillment of Jesus’ prophecy, “If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them.” (Mark 13:20 NIV ).

The phrase “fear God, and give glory to him” is the essence of the believers’ duty to God. The word “fear” refers to respect and reverence. The word “glory” means recognizing God’s power and giving him the honor He is due.

Some Bible students see this as an announcement of judgment rather than an appeal. People around the world had their chance to proclaim allegiance to God. Now God’s great judgment is about to begin. This final worldwide appeal urges all peoples to accept Jesus, the Son of the one true God. No one would have the excuse of never hearing God’s truth. This vision depicts a future scene. Nevertheless, it is unknown whether God will give the world one more chance at that point. What is known is that He offers that chance to the ones who read and study John’s vision now (Rev. 1:3) and receive it.

The message will be proclaimed to everyone; therefore, no one will have the excuse that they did not know the gospel message. As Paul wrote in Romans 1:20, “…they have no excuse for not knowing God.” NLT

This truth is a central theme of Revelation. Whenever there has been a time of judgment, there has been a preceding time of warning. Scripture states in Amos 3:7, “Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.” One of Jesus’ functions on earth was that of a prophet. He issued numerous warnings through His discourses and parables about His return and the need to be prepared for it.

People are being granted the opportunity to repent. However, those who refuse want nothing to do with God. Therefore, their punishment will be justified.

The Three Angels Message - the second angel

Revelation 14:8

8 A second angel followed and said, “Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great, which made all the nations drink the maddening wine of her adulteries.” NIV

The second angel’s message came from the angel who had followed the first through the skies, pronouncing that Babylon is fallen. This event was also prophesied in the Old Testament (Isa. 21:9, Jer. 51:8).

In the Old Testament, Babylon was synonymous with an evil city and an evil empire — a world center for idol worship. Outside that city, King Nebuchadnezzar had built a great statue for himself, and everyone needed to worship it (Dan 3:1-6; compare Rev 13:14-15).

Nebuchadnezzar had reached the height of power and pride but found himself judged by God (Dan 4:28-33). The Babylonians had gone through Jerusalem and taken many of Judah’s citizens into captivity (see 2 Kings 24 and 2 Chron. 36).

As Babylon had been Judah’s worst enemy, the Roman Empire was the main earthly enemy of the early Christians. But openly condemning Rome could certainly have placed John and the Christian communities in greater danger.

However, it is important to understand that John did not invent or alter the language of the prophecy. Christ instructed him to write what he saw (Rev. 1:10–11). When the second angel declares, “Babylon is fallen,” John records the message as he received it. The symbolism itself identifies Rome with the pattern established by ancient Babylon—an idolatrous power that opposed God and oppressed His people.

“Babylon” is the name of the civilization seduced by the beast (see also 17:1-9).

Presently this world system is filled with idolatry, corruption, and sexual sin (18:2-3, 7), a wellspring of ungodly religion, government, and economics.

The Three Angels Message - the 3rd Angel

Rev 14:9-11

9 And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,

10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:

11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

The third angel’s message explained to the nonbelievers what would happen to them if they received the beast’s mark. Their eventual judgment would be much worse, and the consequences eternal. The beast’s mark is false worship, and churches that fail to abandon this worship become churches of Babylon. For more details on the beast mark, please read 666 Mark of the Beast on this website.

While those who belong to God will suffer and be killed, they will have a glorious eternity awaiting them (14:1-5). These are the saints that have endured and kept the Commandments of God. This is where the seed that Jesus planted on the cross comes to fruition.

Those who worship the beast and accept his mark, however, would choose to operate according to the Antichrist’s world economic and religious system and ultimately face God’s judgment. These individuals would have turned away from God to obtain what the world values, thereby violating Christian principles.

Therefore, they will have to drink “the wine of the wrath of God.” The Old Testament regularly depicts God’s anger as in a cup, ready to be poured out (e.g., Job 21:20; Ps. 75:8; Isa. 51:17; Jer. 25:15-38). This cup of wrath is undiluted, “without mixture.” This description refers to the usual Roman practice of diluting wine with water. God’s wrath will be in its most potent form. The full extent of his anger, not watered down by mercy and grace, would soon be poured out on those individuals who had steadfastly declined to repent of sin and receive His salvation.

The Three Angels Message - Revelation 14:11

Their anguish will be with fire and burning sulfur. This description is a depiction taken from the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, two sinful cities that God had destroyed with “fire and burning sulfur” that “rained down from heaven” (Gen 19:24). Fire and sulfur are used as instruments of torture in Revelation 19:20, 20:10, and 21:8. The actual picture may be symbolic. Still, there is no question about the horror and conclusiveness of this judgment, as “the smoke of their torment” rises forever and ever.

In contrast, the redeemed could “rest from all their toils and trials” (14:13 NLT), but the unbelievers will have no release, day or night, from their suffering. Having chosen the side of the beast, they will suffer for it. Jesus described eternal punishment as “fire that never shall be quenched” (Mark 9:44, cf. Rev. 20:10).

God has assured in other passages that He will penalize sin (e.g., Rom 2:6-11; 12:19). The wicked will be avenged for how they have discarded God and neglected their fellow human beings (Matt 13:41-42; 16:27). Jesus assured that Satan, his demons, and the wicked would be cast into hell at the final judgment (Matt 25:41).

While Scripture uses imagery of fiery sulfur, destruction, and darkness for hell (Matt 7:13; 18:8; Jude 13; Rev 14:10), it gives few details. Jesus used the Greek word Gehenna to depict hell. The word hell alludes to the valley of Ben Hinnom, where, at times, Old Testament Israelites would sacrifice their children to idols (2 Chron. 28:3), and later where they burned their garbage and refuse (Jer. 7:31). Jesus continually warned that hell would be a fate far worse than physical death. The Scriptures repeatedly describe hell as a place where one is utterly alone, rejected by God, and excluded from His presence (Matt 25:12, 41; Luke 13:24-28; 2 Thess. 1:8-9).

Conclusion

We are to spread the everlasting gospel, come out of the spiritual impurity of Babylon, and avoid the mark of the beast.

The three angels’ message is solemn. It encourages decisive action on our part and imposes severe consequences for inaction. However, there are also significant and glorious blessings for those who obey God’s Commandments. Rev 14:13 reads, “Then I heard a voice from heaven say, Write: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.” NIV

Blessed are they that die “in the Lord,” meaning those who have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior and keep the Commandments of God. In addition, “their deeds” include heeding the three angels’ messages and encouraging others to do the same.

The Three Angels Message - 2 Peter 3:9

Upon reading this article, you have already witnessed God’s truth. You know that God’s final judgment will not be delayed eternally (2 Peter 3:9). If you have joyfully received the everlasting Good News, confessed your sins, and trusted in Christ to save you, then you have nothing to fear from God’s judgment. The Judge of the whole earth, Jesus Christ, is your Savior! Rom 8:1 reads, “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

The whole human race is on death row, on its way to hell, justly condemned for repeatedly breaking God’s holy law. Were it not for  Jesus, there would be no hope at all. But praise God! For He has declared those who have accepted His Son not guilty and has offered us freedom from sin and the power to do his will.

Amen
